CUNY Tech Equity Initiative RGB

CUNY is proud to announce the Tech Equity Initiative, our new comprehensive plan to turbocharge tech students’ career readiness and connections to employers from their first day of classes through graduation.

Getting a tech job doesn’t start on graduation day. Gaining practical skills and having a chance to learn on the job are critical elements to career preparedness, but not every student has those opportunities while in college. With only 9% of New York City high tech jobs held by Black and Hispanic workers, there’s an opportunity to expand access to these careers. To that end, CUNY is proud to launch the CUNY Tech Equity Initiative, a comprehensive plan that turbocharges tech students’ career readiness and industry connection from their first day of classes through graduation.

Strategy

We’ll address key barriers to students’ career success in four ways:

Impact

With support from industry, including inaugural partner Google, CUNY will build on past successful programming with the aim of impacting:

  • The number of students from across CUNY engaged in career readiness and exploration, including the use of new tech tools like AI-based resume reviewers and world-class employer hiring platforms,
  • The number of tech students participating in paid internships aligned to their career interests, and
  • The number of Black and/or Hispanic students participating in CUNY tech degree programs.
