Kennedy and Jackson Grab CUNYAC Women’s Basketball All-Star Accolades; Simmons Lands On Sportsmanship Team

New York, New York – The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced their 2023-24 CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball All-Stars last week, and two BMCC women's basketball players were honored. Sophomore Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) grabbed Conference All-Star accolades for the second straight season, while freshman Sheliyah Jackson (Bronx, New York) received her first CUNYAC All-Star honor. 
 
Kennedy is the program's first back-to-back CUNYAC All-Star selection since Lauren Malcolm did it during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, while freshman Jania Simmons (Brooklyn, New York) was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

The Brooklyn, New York native has had one of the best careers in recent history for the BMCC women's basketball program, etching herself amongst the program's all-time and single-season statistical leaders putting up season-bests and leading the Panthers in 14 different categories during the 2023-24 season with a team-best in points (395), scoring average (19.8), field goals made (134), field goals attempted (293), field goal percentage (45.7 percent), free throws made (115), free throws attempted (182), free throw percentage (63.2 percent), rebounds (185), rebounding average (9.3), assists (109), assists per game (5.5), steals (111), and steals per game (5.6)Kennedy has scored in double-figures in all 20 games she has played this season and 32 straight times dating back to last year. She has 33 career double-figure games with a team-best 10 20-point games and 16 20-point performances for her career.
 
The Benjamin Banneker Academy product has moved up into the top three in three of four all-time program statistical records, ranking second in program history in career points (668), career steals (161), career assists (146), and seventh all-time in career rebounds (310)Kennedy's team-leading 111 steals are also the second most in a single season, while her points (395) and assists (109) are the fourth most.
 
Kennedy, a four-time CUNYAC Player of the Week, including three straight times from January 22 until February 5 and six times total this season, posted double-digit steals and double-digit assists four and three times this season, both team-bests with a career-high 12 steals in the season opener against LaGuardia Community College on November 7, 2023, and 11 assists against Queensborough Community College on January 30, 2024. On sophomore day, she also hauled down a career-best 16 rebounds against Dutchess Community College on February 1, 2024
 
Kennedy also registered another major single-game program mark not reached in nine seasons, posting the program's first triple-double since the 2014-15 season against Roxbury Community College with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists on January 20, 2024, and doing it three more times after with her fourth triple-double yesterday in CUNYAC Semifinals against Kingsborough Community College on February 14, 2024 with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 steals. During her two seasons at BMCC, she has collected 11 career CUNYAC Weekly honors, with five Rookie of the Week nods last year.
 
Kennedy also currently ranks in the top five in six national statistical categories as she is tied for second in the nation in steals per game (5.5) and fourth in the country with 111 steals and assists per game (5.5) while tying for sixth in the nation with 109 assists while also leading the Panthers with 10 double-doubles this season with and 16 double-doubles for her career.
 
Jackson constructed an excellent freshman campaign, leading the Panthers with 28 blocks, both sixth all-time in program history and eighth most in a single season, with a career-high four blocks coming yesterday in the CUNYAC Semifinals against Kingsborough Community College on February 14, 2024. The Bronx, New York native registered double-digit rebounds eight times while recording five double-figure games and three double-doubles.
 
Jackson finished second on the rebounds (159) and rebounding average (8.4)hauling down a career-high 15 rebounds against Nassau Community College on November 11, 2023. The CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honoree on December 26 dropped a career-high 20 points, 18 of them in the second half on the road against Westchester Community College on December 19, 2023.
 
Simmons averaged 4.3 points per game and rebounds per game, and her best performance came in a victory against Roxbury Community College on January 20, 2024 with a career-high 10 points.
