Black Captures His Fourth CUNYAC Men’s Basketball Rookie Of The Week Accolade, Marte Picks Up Back-to-Back Honorable Mention Honors

New York, New York – After teaming up to lead the Panthers to two victories in their three contests last week, including a 63-57 upset of NJCAA Division III No. 9 nationally-ranked Dutchess Community College, two BMCC men's basketball players were rewarded by the City of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) with weekly honors for their efforts. 
 
Freshman Khalil Black (Queens, New York) captured his fourth CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week honor, and sophomore Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) received Conference Honorable Mention for a second straight week. The accolades are the fifth total for both players this season and the ninth career one for Marte.
 
Black continues to stake his claim as one of the best young newcomers in the CUNYAC this season as he now has recorded double-digit scoring efforts in fifteen straight games and a team-high tied 19 times this year as he averaged 17.7 points per game, six rebounds, and three assists per game while shooting 18-of-31 (58 percent), 8-of-11 from three-point range (72.7 percent), and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe (90 percent). The Queens, New York native kicked off the week with 10 points and a team-high tied three assists while grabbing eight rebounds in a 79-52 CUNYAC win over Queensborough Community College, then contributed 10 points and a team-best tied three assists in a 63-57 upset of NJCAA Division III No. 9 nationally ranked Dutchess Community College.
 
Black saved his best performance for last over the weekend, putting up a monstrous performance, becoming the second Panther player this season to have a 30-point game, dropping a team and career-high 33 points on a team-best 12-of-17 shooting from the field (71 percent) and a career-high six three-pointers made and 75 percent mark from downtown against Suffolk Community College.
 
Black leads the Panthers in three-pointers made (48) and three-pointers attempted (113), connecting on two or more three-pointers in 15 of his 19 games this season and has done it in six of his last seven games. His 48 three-pointers are 13th in all-time program history.
 
The Institute for Health Professions H.S. product is also second on the Panthers in total points (337), scoring average (14.7), field goals made (115), field goal attempted (274), free throws made (59), free throws attempted (76), and steals (31).
 
Marte continues to be the Panther's go-to player every week, and this one was no different as the Bronx, New York native averaged 18 points per game and 19-of-31 shooting (61.2 percent) to go along with nine rebounds, seven assists, and five steals in BMCC's three games this week.
 
The Harry S. Truman High School product scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out a team-high tied three assists in a dominant 79-52 victory over Queensborough Community College, then followed it up with 10 points and made program history as the program's all-time leader in career steals with 101 to go along with a team-best tied three assists while grabbing three rebounds in the Panthers 63-57 upset of NJCAA Division III No. 9 nationally-ranked Dutchess Community College
 
Marte posted his team-leading seventh 20-point game and 11th of his career with 23 points while distributing a team-best tied three assists and grabbed a team-high two steals against Suffolk Community College.
 
Marte also became the third player in program history to reach 700 career points, finishing Saturday afternoon's contest with 707 career points, ranking fourth most in program history. Marte's season-best 431 points are also ranked ninth most in a single season.
 
Marte, who broke the men's basketball program's all-time steals record last Thursday to reach 101 career steals against NJCAA Division III nationally-ranked Dutchess Community College in a 63-57 victorynow has 103 career steals for his career.
 
The 2022-2023 CUNYAC All-Star has registered double figures, a team-best tied 19 times this season and 35 times total in his career, and leads the Panthers in eight different categories in total points (431), scoring average (19.6), field goals made (169), field goals attempted (299), free throws made (82), free throws attempted (104), steals (51), and steals per game (2.3).
