Bronx Community College Rallies To Nip BMCC Men’s Basketball On Late Jumper

Bronx, New York – Bronx Community College used an 11-2 run over the final five and a half minutes of the second half and a jumper from Taijay Good with 11 seconds left as the Broncos rallied to upend the BMCC men's basketball team 62-61 on Tuesday night in CUNYAC action at Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx, New York. The Broncos picked up their second straight victory, improving to 2-7 (1-2 CUNYAC), while the Panthers dropped to 4-5 (2-2 CUNYAC) with the loss.

Four Panthers scored in double figures on the night, with freshman Khalil Black (Queens, New York) leading all scorers for the third time this season with a game-high 18 points, with 14 coming in the first half. Sophomore Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) chipped in with 12 points apiece. Sophomore Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) registered his second double-double of the season with a team-high 11 rebounds and 11 points, while Mohammed missed back-to-back doubles by one rebound with nine on the night. Ja'Lyn Griffin (Ithaca, New York) dished out a career and game-high tied nine assists in the contest, with six of them coming in the first half.

Marte and Mohammed both led the Panthers defensively, with Marte snatching a game-best four steals and Mohammed swatting away a game-high three shots.

The Panthers outscored the Bronx 40-22 in the Paint and produced 19 points off 16 Bronco turnovers. BMCC also committed just 10 turnovers, which was tops on the season.

Bronx Community College got out of the gate quickly, racing to a 10-4 lead at 15:49 on a layup from Daniel Armstrong, then built their advantage to their largest of the night 12 twice on a three-pointer by Taijay Good at 12:22 and a jumper from Timothaeus Graham at 10:14. The Panthers would go on a tear over the next 9:10 outscoring the Broncos 28-15 down the stretch capped off by a Black layup with 43 seconds left to give BMCC a 39-38 halftime lead.

The Panthers built on their strong finish to the first half by grabbing seven of the first nine points of the second half to build a 46-40 lead at 16:33 on a jumper from Marte. The Broncos rang off the following five points with a trey from Matthew Candelaria, cutting the BMCC lead to one, 46-45, at the 13:29 mark before the Panthers scored 13 of the following 19 points over the next 8:10 to build their lead to the biggest of night eight, 59-51 on a Jarrett layin in the paint at the 5:39 mark.

Bronx Community College would hold BMCC without a field goal for the final 4:24 of the contest, with their only points coming on a pair of Black free throws at 2:20 while rolling off a furious 10-1 run to get the deficit down to one, 61-60 with 1:15 remaining on a three-pointer from Timothaeus Graham. The Panthers had chances to salt the game away but couldn't connect on a jumper from Black with 51 seconds left and a three-pointer from Griffin with 31 seconds left.

After Timothaeus Graham missed a go-ahead layup with 24 seconds left, Taijay Good wouldn't squander the chance for a second time, draining a jumper with 11 seconds left to give Bronx Community College back the lead 62-61. Mohammed had the opportunity for the win for BMCC with three seconds left but couldn't connect on a jumper, securing the Bronco's thrilling comeback victory.

Bronx Community College had three players record double-digit scoring efforts, led by Taijay Good's team-high 17 points, while Matthew Candelaria came off the bench to score 12 points. Good distributed a game-best-tied nine assists, while Abraham Richter posted a double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points. Herbert Gary ripped down a game-high 14 rebounds on the night.

The Panthers will look to bounce back quickly two nights from now on Thursday, December 7 at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last year's 2022-23 CUNYAC Semifinal matchup against Hostos Community College at BMCC Gymnasium in New York, New York.
