Women's Basketball Battles But Comes Up Short In Loss To Kingsorough Community College At Home

New York, New York – The BMCC women's basketball team gave an undefeated Kingsborough Community College squad all they could handle for three quarters, but the Wave would turn it on in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Panthers with an 82-59 victory on Tuesday night at BMCC Gymnasium. Kingsborough C.C. remains perfect at 6-0 (2-0 CUNYAC), while BMCC drops to 1-5 (1-2 CUNYAC) with the loss.

Sophomore Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) put up her fourth straight double-double and team-leading fifth of the season with a team-high 20 points and bringing down a game-best tied 10 boards. The double-double was the 11th of Kennedy's career, and she also handed out a team-best five assists.

Freshman Jania Simmons (Brooklyn, New York) posted a career-high 10 points, while classmates Mariah Wigfall (New York, New York) and Patricia Perez (Brooklyn, New York) led the Panthers with three steals each.

The Panthers started the contest strong in the first quarter, grabbing the game's first seven points with a Kennedy fastbreak and-one layup, making it 7-0 at the 7:50 mark. The Wave responded with a furious 12-0 run capped off by a Davis three-pointer at the 4:24 mark to make it 12-7 before the Panthers punched right back, ending the period on a 10-1 run with a Sheliyah Jackson (Bronx, New York) right block layup with eight seconds left giving them a 17-13 lead after one.

BMCC opened their lead to seven, 20-13, on a Perez three-pointer at the 9:56 mark of the second quarter, then increased their margin to its largest of the night eight, 26-18, on a Kennedy right-handed layin from the left block at 7:37. Kingsborough roared back with a 9-0 run to retake the lead 27-26 at the 5:38 mark on a Murray Nelson finish from the front of the bucket then Bryanna Sledge drove and scored at 4:40 to give BMCC back the lead 28-27. The Wave registered six of the following nine points to grab a 36-30 lead with 1:40 remaining on a Chamiya Foy jumper, then Kennedy took it to the rack for a hard-fought layup but couldn't convert the three-point play, and Kamella Ross (Bronx, New York) went 1-for-2 at the line to cut the deficit down to three, 36-33 at halftime.

The Wave started the third quarter off fast with the first six points to build their lead to nine, 42-33 at 8:29, when Davis split a pair of Panther defenders and laid it up. The Panthers would mount a 10-4 run to get within three, 46-43, on a Simmons baseline jumper at 4:36. BMCC scored eight of the following 12 points to go back in front 51-50 on a pair of Jackson free throws with 31 seconds remaining before Davis knocked down a fadeaway jumper from the left elbow with 13 seconds remaining to give the Wave a 52-51 lead after three.

Kingsborough took over in the fourth quarter, outscoring BMCC 30-8 overall, and after both teams traded jumpers to start, the Wave went on a 10-0 run to build their lead to double digits for the first time on the night 64-53 at 5:49 and cruised to an 82-59 victory.

Two Kingsborough Community College players registered 20-point scoring efforts led by Tionna Davis's game-high 23 points, while Jayden Vega scored 20. Kayla Wilson and Murray Nelson both hauled down a game-high tied 10 rebounds each, while Wilson also dished out a game-high six assists, and Davis snagged a game-best six steals.

The Panthers return to the action a week from tonight on Tuesday, December 5, at 6 p.m. against Bronx Community College in CUNYAC action at Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx, New York. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
