A Message From the President About the Attacks on Israel

October 11, 2023

As CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez has shared in his messages, the CUNY community is devastated by the violent attacks carried out by Hamas militants on the people of Israel.

At BMCC, we share this sense of devastation and shock, and remain deeply concerned about the impact of the ongoing violence in the region on all members of our community. Our hearts are with those who continue to suffer.

We are also in strong support of the Chancellor’s statement that our University does not condone the activities of any internal organization that sponsors rallies to celebrate Hamas’ campaign of terror.

BMCC as an institution is grounded in the resolve to safeguard civil discourse and keep all members of our campus community safe. We remain committed to provide a campus environment that inspires scholarship, supports constructive dialogue, values tolerance and promotes civil engagement for all — fostering understanding, inclusion and belonging.

As a college community, we are here to provide support and resources to all community members — faculty, staff, or student — who have been impacted. If you or anyone you know has been affected or is in need of assistance, the following resources are available:

For our students:

  • The Counseling Center provides crisis and personal counseling to students. Students can schedule an appointment with a counselor either virtually or in-person by emailing counselingcenter@bmcc.cuny.edu or calling (212) 220-8140.
  • The International Student Services Office is ready to help students who have questions about their status as international students. To contact the International Student Services Office, email internationalstudents@bmcc.cuny.edu.
  • Staff at the Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC) are available both virtually and on-campus to discuss options for those who face financial impact. Please visit Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC), email arc@bmcc.cuny.edu or call (212) 220-8195.
  • Student Affairs staff are available to assist students having difficulty and can be reached at (212) 220-8130, by emailing studentaffairs@bmcc.cuny.edu, or visiting S-350 at the 199 Chambers Street campus.

For our staff and faculty:

BMCC and CUNY provide Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), that include free, confidential access to support, guidance and referrals for various needs and concerns through CCA@YourService. Please reach out confidentially to (800) 833-8707. Counselors are available 24/7. You can also visit online for more resources.

We also want to remind you that CUNY policies prohibit all unlawful discrimination and harassment — as well as retaliation. CUNY is committed to addressing discrimination and retaliation reports promptly, consistently, and fairly. If you experience or witness any unlawful discrimination or harassment, please report it on the CUNY Portal.

Finally, please check in on your colleagues, classmates and all members of our community who are in need of support — and also take care of yourselves. As part of our culture of care, we will continue to support one another.
