New York, New York – For the first time since 2020, Borough of Manhattan Community College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2022-23 season, with nine sports represented. Each Top-10 moment voted by our athletics staff will be unveiled, with a recap every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks, culminating with our top moment of the 2022-23 athletic year, released Thursday, August 31st.
No. 8 – Demaris Andrews Receives 2022-23 CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year Accolades
Rolling along with No. 8 on our 2022-23 BMCC Athletics Top-10 Moments is women's basketball forward
Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey), becoming the program's fourth ever 2022-23 CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball Rookie of the Year winner and the first in seven seasons.
Andrews was the first Panther player in program history to capture the honor since Kristen Merrell did it during the 2014-15 season. The Bayonne, New Jersey native was one of BMCC's top scorers from the 2022-23 season, posting a team-high 350 points, including a team-best 18 double-figure games, eight 20-point games, and eight double-doubles, with two of them coming in the 2022-23 CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball Tournament against Queensborough and Hostos Community College.
Andrews was also tops on the Panthers in rebounds (174), free throws made (130), free throws attempted (191), field goals made (101), field goal attempted (378), assists (39), and blocks (7). She was also second in scoring average (16.7) points per game, (8.3) rebounds per game, steals (47), and three-pointers made (18) and three-pointers attempted (101).
The Hudson Catholic product got off to a hot start in 2022-23, opening up her career with a double-double scoring a team-high 22 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a team-best three against UCONN Avery Point in the season opener, then followed it up with a 24-point performance on the road at Rockland Community College knocking down a career-best 11-for-14 from the charity stripe.
Andrews helped the Panthers clinch the second seed in the 2023 CUNYAC CC Women's Basketball Championship with a career-high 26 points against Queensborough Community College on January 31, 2023. She was also outstanding in the 2022-23 CUNYAC Women's Basketball Championship, registering a game-high tied 25 points along with a team-best tied 10 rebounds against Queensborough Community College to send the Panthers to their first conference finals since the 2018-19 season. Andrews followed up that performance with a team-best 17-point performance in the Championship game against Hostos while also grabbing 11 boards in the contest.
The three-time
CUNYAC Rookie of the Week also became the third Panther player in the last three seasons to join the 20-point and 20-rebound club in a single game since
Lauren Malcolm and
Shyasia Preston did it back during the 2019-20 season during BMCC's first victory of the season against Queensborough. She hauled down a career-high 21 rebounds in the contest.
