Charlotte, North Carolina – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced their 2022-23 All-Academic Team on Monday afternoon, and eight Borough of Manhattan Community College student-athletes received NJCAA All-Academic Team honors for their impeccable work in the classroom. Student-athletes qualify for the NJCAA All-Academic Team by achieving an overall grade-point average of 3.60 or higher for the 2022-23 academic year.

"It has been so satisfying to see our student-athletes perform at a high level in athletic competition and the classroom," said Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC. "Our student-athletes this year have played a major part in laying the foundation for what we want to achieve both academically and athletically at BMCC."

Women's cross country freshman Gabriele Dos Santos Mello (New York, New York) and BMCC men's soccer midfielder Mohammed Alghanimi (Brooklyn, New York) earned First-Team accolades after achieving a perfect 4.00 GPA for the 2022-23 academic year. Two weeks ago, Alghanimi and Dos Santos Mello were named to the 2022-23 NJCAA All-Region 15 Academic team and were both part of a conference-best 25 2022 CUNYAC Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections back in March.

Dos Santos Mello was the Panther's top women's runner for the 2022 season, receiving a medal in the 2022 Region 15 Championship for her top-seven finish in the 5k with a time of 30:37.0, while Alghanimi played four matches for BMCC during the 2022 season registering a career-best four shots in 9-0 victory over Laguardia Community College on September 15, 2022.

Panthers sophomore midfielder El Hadji Gaye (Dakar, Senegal) and sophomore shortstop Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) joined BMCC women's basketball freshman Aayatullah Adeyemi (Brooklyn, New York) on the 2022-23 All-Academic Second Team for posting a GPA between 3.80-3.99.

Gaye had a banner sophomore season to close out his BMCC career, becoming the program's sixth CUNYAC Community College Men's Soccer Player of the Year and 19th CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A month ago, Gaye became the first-ever student-athlete in the Borough of Manhattan Community College Athletics program history to earn 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America ®Men's At-Large honors after being named 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District for the first time in school history the month before.

Reyes produced one of the program's best seasons in over a decade, becoming the first Panther baseball player in 13 years to receive All-Region 15 First Team and grabbing CUNYAC All-Star accolades for a second straight season. Reyes was the first Panther ballplayer to receive CUNYAC All-Star accolades twice since Wilson Aristy did it during the 2013 and 2015 seasons while also finishing his career in the top five in five single-season and all-time offensive categories for BMCC Baseball after the 2023 season.
