New York, New York – After being a major force behind the Panther's men's basketball program's return to the CUNYAC Community College Championship for the first time since the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach, Barry Gonzalez will step into the big chair, as the next head women's basketball coach at The Borough of Manhattan Community College. Gonzalez will take over the BMCC women's basketball program after serving as an assistant coach for the Panther's men's basketball program for the last two seasons.

"Barry did a great job helping rebuild the Men's Basketball program coming out of the pandemic," said Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC. "With his experience in the Women's game, I am very excited to see him build off last year's women's team and keep BMCC Women's Basketball moving in the right direction.

The stint will be Gonzalez's first-ever head coaching role at the collegiate level after compiling an overall coaching record of 52-42 (.553) as a high school head coach for men's and women's basketball in the New York area.

"I am humbled and blessed for the opportunity to coach the women's basketball program and looking forward to returning BMCC to its appropriate prominence on the conference, regional, and eventually the national level," said Gonzalez. "Very eager to meet and become familiar with the potential players for the upcoming season."

Gonzalez brings outstanding credentials to the BMCC women's basketball program, helping Head Coach Tommy Keenan turn around the men's program the last two seasons after the pandemic with a nine-win turnaround during 2022-23 and leading the program to its first double-digit winning season since 2019-20. He also helped the program produce three CUNYAC All-Star selections for the first time in 21 years while tutoring eight CUNYAC weekly selections (six CUNYAC Rookies of the Week and two CUNYAC Players of the Week).

Before his time at BMCC, Gonzalez was the head coach of the KIPP NYC College Prep High School girl's basketball program from 2019 to 2021 and previously served as the women's JV head coach at Riverdale Country School from 2018 to 2019.

Gonzalez had a successful tenure as the Men's Basketball Head Coach at United Nations International School from 2015 to 2018, guiding the Unicorns to 44 victories during his time from 2015 to 2018, leading them to a New York City Athletic League (NYCAL) Championship during the 2016-17 season and a Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) Championship in 2014-15. He also tutored the 2016-17 New York City Athletic League (NYCAL) Men's Basketball Player of the Year Benjamin Rosow, and served as the Head Men's Track and Field Coach in 2009.

Throughout his coaching career, Gonzalez has been a fixture on the AAU circuit as a Head Coach at Harlem United AAU. He is also a USA Basketball Gold licensed and Track & Field Level 1 Certified Coach.

Gonzalez serves as a Senior Examination Specialist with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) with 36 plus years experience as a major federal bank regulator. He earned his bachelor's degree in finance from Fordham University in 1986 and graduated high school from the prestigious Lawrenceville School in 1982.
