20 BMCC Student-Athletes Garner 2022-23 Academic All-Region 15 Team Honors

New York, New York - After a successful 2022-23 Athletic season chock full of championship accolades and awards, 20 BMCC Athletics student-athletes added to those list of achievements as they were named to the 2022-23 NJCAA All-Region 15 Academic team for their exemplary work in the classroom. The Academic All-Region 15 accolades are given to student-athletes with a grade-point average of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale for the 2022-23 academic year.
 
The list of honorees is comprised of sports from the 2022-23 Athletic Seasons (men's & women's cross country, men's & women's soccer, women's volleyball and tennis, football, men's & women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's bowling, men's wrestling, men's and women's outdoor track & field, men's lacrosse and volleyball, men's golf and tennis, baseball, softball, and Esports).
 
"The only thing more satisfying than the accomplishments we had this year athletically are the achievements these student-athletes received academically. They all have played a Key part in laying the foundation for what we want to achieve both academically and athletically at BMCC," said Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC.

The BMCC men's soccer team, fresh off of its league-best 13th CUNYAC CC Championship, led the charge with five student-athletes on the 2022-23 Academic All-Region 15 team, while the men's and women's cross country team in their inaugural season and Esports team each came in second with four selections each. Women's Volleyball, which captured the program's first CUNYAC CC Title since 2006, joined women's basketball and baseball with two apiece. Veronica Lozano (Morelia Michoacan, Mexico) was the lone representative from women's soccer. 
 
The accolades keep coming for El Hadji Gaye (Dakar, Senegal), the program's sixth CUNYAC CC Men's Soccer Player of the Year and 19th CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the YearGaye also recently became the first-ever student-athlete in the Borough of Manhattan Community College Athletics program to earn 2022-23 Academic All-District and All-America ® Men's At-Large honors while teammates Ademola Opesanwo (Bronx, New York)Mohamed Nasr (Brooklyn, New York), Hamilton Azon (Bronx, New York), and Mohammed Alghanimi (Brooklyn, New York) also joined him on the 2022 CUNYAC Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll
 
Cross County freshmen Trent Santoro and Gabriele Dos Santos Mello (New York, New York) both earned medals in the 2022 Region 15 Championship for placing in the top seven in the 8k and 5k with times of 30:45.43 and 30:37.0, while their teammates Christian Maldonado (New York, New York) and Alyssa Abrahams (Kingston, Jamaica) also joined them with academic accolades during the fall as CUNYAC Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections.

BMCC Esport's Joel Pedrosa, Terrence Sanchez, and Abel Sanchez (Bronx, NY) also added to their academic accolades after grabbing Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall.
 
Emmanuella Aurel (Port Au Prince, Haiti), a 2022 CUNYAC Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll Selection, was crucial in leading the Panther women's volleyball program to its first regular season title since 2008 and Conference Championship since 2006Aurel, also an All-Region 15 Second Team selection, handled the backline for the Panthers, setting a new all-time program record and single-season record for digs with 400. Teammate Sarah Lee (Staten Island, New York), also a Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recipient, posted 328 digs which were second most in a single season and third-most in all-time program history

Baseball's Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) produced one of the program's best seasons in over a decade, becoming the first Panther baseball player in 13 years to receive All-Region 15 First Team and grabbing CUNYAC All-Star accolades for a second straight season. Reyes was the first Panther ballplayer to receive CUNYAC All-Star accolades twice since Wilson Aristy did it during the 2013 and 2015 seasons while also finishing his career in the top five in five single-season and all-time offensive categories for BMCC Baseball after the 2023 season.

Monroe College (New Rochelle) led the way with a Region-best 158 honorees. BMCC led all the CUNYAC schools in Academic All-Region 15 selections with 20, followed by Queensborough Community College (16), Kingsborough Community College (15),  Hostos (10), and Bronx Community College (4).
