New York, New York – The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its 2022-23 Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for the Winter and Spring sports seasons, giving out 507 citations for academic excellence in the classroom for the Spring 2023 semester. After a full return to intercollegiate competition during the 2022-23 academic year, eight BMCC student-athletes were named to the 2022-23 CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

BMCC Athletics closes out the 2022-23 Athletic Season with 33 CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections, the most among the community colleges both seasons after a league-best 25 Panther student-athletes landed on the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll during the fall.

"It's extremely satisfying to see our student-athletes accomplish success athletically and especially in the classroom. They have played a crucial role in achieving the standards we strive for in our program both academically and athletically at BMCC," said Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC.

The CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes across 13 member institutions who participate in a varsity-level sport and carry a grade point average of 3.2 or better on a 4.0 scale.

"Our CUNYAC student-athletes continue to rise to the challenge and thrive in the classroom," said CUNYAC Associate Director for Operations Kim Wright. "Congratulations to our honorees as they continue to put in championship performances on and off the field."

The BMCC Baseball and Esports program led the way for BMCC with three 2022-23 CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections each, while women's basketball had two. BMCC Rocket League's Kyanna Cruz led the way for all BMCC student-athletes as one of the 29 Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections out of the 507 recognized to finish the semester with a 4.0 grade-point average. Aayatullah Adeyemi (Brooklyn, New York) led the way for women's basketball with a 3.83 GPA, and Gelacio Gervacio (Brooklyn, New York) for the Panthers Baseball team with a 3.76 GPA.

Baseball's Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York), who finished behind Gervacio with a 3.75 GPA, produced one of the program's best seasons in over a decade, becoming the first Panther baseball player in 13 years to receive All-Region 15 First Team and also grabbing CUNYAC All-Star accolades. Reyes was the first Panther ballplayer to receive CUNYAC All-Star accolades twice since Wilson Aristy did it during the 2013 and 2015 seasons. He also finished his career in the top five in five single-season and all-time offensive categories for BMCC Baseball after the 2023 season with seven doubles and three triples which were second most in a single season, while his 22 RBIs and 20 steals are the third most in a single season, and his 29 hits rank fourth. He also concluded his career tied for second all-time with three career triples. His 45 career hits and 29 steals are third most in school history, and his 26 career RBIs and 11 career doubles are fourth.

The Baseball squad's third Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California), who owned a 3.23 GPA, finished the 2023 season as the Panther's leader in runs scored (27) and tied for first in triples (3) with Reyes, which are also tied for second-most in a single season. He also smashed a team-best two home runs, which were also the second most in a single season, while picking up CUNYAC All-Star honors with Reyes and 2023 Second Team All-Region 15 accolades. He also made an impact on the mound leading the way with 31 strikeouts, the third-most in a single season and sixth all-time in program history.

Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York), one of the two women's basketball players to receive Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll accolades with a 3.42 GPA, hit the ground immediately from arrival on the hardwood in December, leading the Panthers in scoring average at 19.5 points per game which was also eighth in the country. She was also tops on the team in rebounding average at 8.9 and steals with 50 while finishing second in four categories with 273 points, 100 field goals made, 328 field goals attempted, 56 free throws made, 106 free throws attempted, and 37 assists.

The Brooklyn, New York native racked up awards during the 2022-23 season and made an impact from the moment she stepped on the court in December, registering 13 double-figure games total to go along with five 20-point games and two 30-point scoring efforts. The Benjamin Banneker Academy product posted a career-high 30 points twice against Queensborough Community College and Hostos while also grabbing National and CUNYAC Weekly Awards, becoming the first Panther player in almost a decade to grab NJCAA Division III Player of the Week accolades and a team-high five CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors this season, including capturing four straight CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honors and a 2022-23 CUNYAC All-Star Selection.

Hunter College turned in a league-best 91 honorees among the senior colleges, edging CCNY by one (90), followed by John Jay (79), Baruch (77), Lehman (53), Brooklyn (47), York (12), and Medgar Evers (10).
