U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman Secures $357K in Federal Funding for BMCC Project Impact Program

U.S. Representative Dan Goldman (NY-10) presented a $357,000 Community Project Funding award to the Project Impact program at BMCC during a March 2 press conference at 199 Chambers Street. Project Impact is a BMCC campus-based initiative aimed at increasing access to higher education, supporting student success and reducing recidivism among justice-impacted students. Founded in 2019, the overriding goal of Project Impact is to support the academic success of justice-impacted students through graduation by providing them with the tools, credentials, skills and pathways necessary to liberate them from their past involvement in the justice system. The new funding — the program’s first federal grant — will enable BMCC to pilot a cohort-based program, Bridge to Success, that will serve 50 justice-impacted students. Bridge to Success will provide structured academic support, advising and wraparound services to help ensure students receive the necessary resources, preparation and support for a smooth transition into their first full semesters in higher education.

Herstory

BMCC Opens Women’s Herstory Month with Inspiring Ceremony

BMCC’s Women’s Herstory month opened with an inspiring ceremony featuring three BMCC alumni— Beverly McDonald and her two children, Annika and Mikhail McDonald—as keynote speakers on March 4 in Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street. BMCC’s Women’s Herstory month honors women, not only for their contribution to the betterment of society, but also the great achievements they’ve accomplished as students, teachers, mothers, and much more. The event also featured remarks from BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe who had a message for BMCC women faculty and staff: “You belong here, you matter here, and your brilliance is needed,” said Dr. Munroe. The president also thanked long-time BMCC supporter and BMCC Foundation Inc. Board member Elizabeth Butson for her dedication to the College. Alumni Beverly McDonald, who graduated from BMCC in 2019 with a Health Education degree and is in her third-year teaching children with special needs closed her remarks by encouraging women to continue working to achieve their goals. “Don’t be fearful, it’s a process,” said Mrs. McDonald. “Take your time, and don’t listen to the naysayers."

Resource Fair

BMCC’s Office of First Year and New Student Programs hosted the Spring 2026 Resource Fair on March 3 in the BMCC gymnasium at 199 Chambers St.  Representatives from the College’s student support programs were on hand to answer questions and offer information. “The Spring 2026 Resource Fair is a fantastic opportunity for students to discover the resources BMCC offers, all in one place,” said Shahreen Laskar, Director of First Year & New Student Programs. “It also gives staff a chance to connect with students outside their offices and highlight the programs and services available to support their success, while also building our campus community. It’s one of the most anticipated events on campus each semester.”

A Home Worth Fighting For

Urban Studies Program Hosts Inaugural Movie Night: A Home Worth Fighting For

On February 25 at 199 Chambers Street, BMCC’s Urban Studies Program hosted its very first public Movie Night, A Home Worth Fighting For, bringing together students, faculty, and members of the Chelsea-Elliott community for an evening of film and dialogue. According to the filmmaker’s synopsis, “Through the eyes of longtime residents fighting to save their homes, A Home Worth Fighting For exposes a flawed political process that prioritizes private developers over the preservation of public housing and dismisses calls for transparency.” The event also featured a panel discussion with director Natasha Florentino; resident activist Renee Keitt; and Dr. James Rodriguez, Associate Professor at CUNY’s School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU). More than 30 students and visitors attended. Urban Studies Program Coordinator Shirley Leyro said, “This event allowed us to explore one of the most critical topics in Urban Studies: housing, at a time when cities across the globe are grappling with an affordable housing crisis. The event also provided an opportunity to highlight the Urban Academy partnership: students who graduate from BMCC with an A.A. in Urban Studies are automatically accepted into SLU.” Learn more about BMCC’s Urban Studies program.
