Washington Monthly Ranks BMCC Seventh Best Hispanic Serving Two-Year College in United States

BMCC—a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution—has been named by Washington Monthly magazine as the seventh best two-year Hispanic Serving College in the United States. Washington Monthly, in collaboration with the non-profit Excelencia in Education, released the comparison of how schools serve the growing Hispanic population late last month. The magazine ranks two-year schools in a separate list from four-year institutions, because of what it calls a methodological wrinkle: “Given how often students at these institutions finish their degrees at other schools, we count transfers as a positive rather than a negative,” said the report.  In 2024, more than 43% of BMCC’s student body was Hispanic. Nationwide, Hispanic students made up 80 percent of increases in degree attainment between 2017 and 2022. Meanwhile, the number of Hispanic high school graduates are projected to increase by 16 percent by 2041.

BMCC’s Shirley Fiterman Art Center Fall Exhibition to Feature Artists Courtney McClellan and Victoria Dugger

The Shirley Fiterman Art Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) has announced two exhibitions—Courtney McClellan: Simulations and Victoria Dugger: Late Bloomer—which will open September 10 and run through December 20. McClellan is a conceptual, installation-based artist, while Dugger is an expressionistic, figurative mixed-media artist. However, there is, if not a single through line, a network of fine threads that links the artists. As part of the show’s opening on September 10, both artists will participate in a discussion starting at 5 p.m., followed by a reception at 6 p.m. in the gallery at 81 Barclay Street.
Pictured above: Courtney McClellan, Liberty University School of Law (detail), 2025, Digital print, 16 x 20 inches; and Victoria Dugger, Sugar Coat It, 2024, Garden chair, tutu, nylon stockings, pearls, and fabric trim, 34 x 22 x 14 inches.

BMCC Debuts Its First Float at the 58th West Indian American Day Parade

BMCC made a vibrant debut at the 58th Annual West Indian American Day Parade, stretching along a lively two-mile stretch of Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn on September 1. This year marked a milestone for the College, which proudly showcased its very first float amid a sea of colorful costumes, pulsating music and spirited revelers celebrating Caribbean culture. Led by College President, Dr. Anthony E. Munroe, BMCC's float became a beacon of camaraderie and unity, as staff, alumni, family, and friends, came together to represent the College at the event, which attracts over 1 million attendees each year. The atmosphere was electric, with deejays and artists on the float who kept the crowd moving and engaged. “The energy was infectious,” said Michelle Hernandez, Assistant Vice President of Communications, Marketing, and External Affairs. “Our presence at the parade truly showcased the spirit of BMCC and our commitment to embracing diversity.” As attendees waved flags and danced to the rhythmic beats, the parade became a beautiful tapestry of cultures, highlighting the importance of celebrating the West Indian community and fostering a sense of pride among participants. The event not only provided exposure for the College but also underscored the values of inclusivity and appreciation for each other’s heritage.
