BMCC Cannabis Workforce Development Program Hosts Career Summit
New Yorkers interested in exploring career opportunities in the state’s expanding cannabis industry filled the BMCC gymnasium at 100 North Moore Street on July 14 for the Cannabis Career Summit, presented by BMCC’s Cannabis Workforce and Business Development program. The four-and-a-half-hour event hosted by BMCC’s Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development drew more than 150 attendees, including students, alumni, employers, and community members. Fifteen employers and organizations representing diverse areas of the cannabis industry ranging from licensed dispensaries to security firms, manufacturing companies, and educational programs participated in the summit.
BMCC Leaders Participate in CIEE Global Internship Conference in Singapore
BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe joined international education leaders at the 13th Annual CIEE Global Internship Conference (GIC), held June 25 to 27 in Singapore. The event—“Leading Change in Global Internships”—brought together hundreds of global leaders in higher education, industry, and government to drive learning, action, and innovation around the task of preparing young people for a global workplace through work-integrated learning experiences. Vice President of Enrollment Management Dr. Sanjay Ramdath, Global Exchanges and Experiences Manager Sandra Cortez, and Interim Senior Vice President and Provost Dr. Liesl Jones also attended.
BMCC Celebrates IT Career Pathways Graduates at Completion Ceremony
BMCC’s Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development celebrated graduates of its Information Technology (IT) Career Pathways Training program with a Completion Ceremony on July 24 at the Fiterman Hall Conference Center. The event honored individuals who completed one of three tracks within the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Certificate Program: Security Analyst, Cloud Engineering, and Computer Network Support. Over the years, BMCC has grown its IT Career Pathways program by forming strategic partnerships with organizations such as AWS Academy, Cisco Networking Academy, CompTIA, and the New York State Department of Labor. The College has also launched tech apprenticeships and stackable certificate programs that directly connect training with employment. These initiatives provide affordable, industry-recognized credentials for learners seeking careers in high-growth sectors such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, and network support.
BMCC Hosts Aspen Institute’s 2025 Transfer Scholars Network Convening
BMCC hosted representatives from 17 community colleges, as well as other organizations, for the Aspen Institute’s Transfer Scholars Network 2025 Partner Convening on July 25 at Fiterman Hall. The goal of the convening was to strengthen the connections between the colleges in the network and to develop stronger pathways to support students before, during, and after transfer.The event featured a student panel that included BMCC alum Joelly Castillo, who is currently enrolled at Brown University, and was moderated by Nolvia Delgado, executive director of the Kaplan Educational Foundation, who is also a BMCC alum. In her welcoming remarks, Associate Provost Liesel Jones emphasized the unique strengths of community college students and the gifts they bring to their transfer destinations. This is the second convening of the Aspen Transfer Scholars Network. The Aspen Institute’s choice to host the event at BMCC highlights the College’s leadership role as a community college partner in the network.
UMLA Welcomes New Participants to My Brother’s Keeper Summer Connect Program
BMCC’s Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA) welcomed more than 100 new participants in the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Summer Connect Program with a two-day orientation, held July 14 to 16. The orientation marked an important first step in community building—setting the tone and preparing students for the MBK summer experience ahead. Among the highlights were introductions to college courses and instructors, information sessions on student success resources—including academic support, mentorship programs, and career guidance—as well as tours of the BMCC campus and a question-and-answer session. BMCC’s MBK Summer Connect Program runs for six weeks over the summer, meeting daily Monday through Thursday. The program is designed to provide young men of color with a supportive college transition experience, complete with for-credit coursework, skill-building activities, and access to long-term academic and career mentorship—not only during the summer, but also continuing throughout the academic year.
BMCC Hosts HETS Student Passport and Board Meeting
BMCC’s Fiterman Hall was the setting for the Hispanic Educational Technology Services (HETS) Student Passport—New York edition—from June 16 to 20. During the Passport event, students from Puerto Rico, the United States, and Latin America had the opportunity to explore various New York member institutions, including BMCC, through academic experiences. Presenters, including BMCC student Oussama Ait Daoud, shared projects that strategically use technology to support, drive, and optimize their academic goals and extracurricular initiatives. BMCC also hosted the HETS board meeting on June 23 and 24 in Fiterman Hall.
Office of Student Activities Hosts Inauguration Ceremony for SGA
BMCC’s Office of Student Activities hosted the eighth annual inauguration ceremony for the BMCC Student Government Association (SGA) on July 7 in Richard Harris Terrace. BMCC President, Dr. Anthony E. Munroe and Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Marva Craig, participated in the ceremony. The inauguration signifies the end of the term of office for the 2024-2025 SGA and the start for the 2025-2026 SGA. Members of both SGAs, as well as SGA officers from earlier years, were present for the ceremony alongside BMCC administration, staff and students.
