BMCC Shines Spotlight on Student Achievement at 2025 Honors Convocation
BMCC hosted its 2025 Honors Convocation on May 27 in Theatre 2 at 199 Chambers Street. The event recognized outstanding student achievement both in and outside of the classroom across numerous disciplines. Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Marva Craig and Interim Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Liesel B. Jones delivered introductory remarks. During his welcoming address, BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe described the event as a momentous occasion dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the hard work, dedication, and grit that each of the College’s honorees has demonstrated throughout their academic journey at BMCC. Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes

BMCC Hosts Memorial for Civil Rights Icon Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes
BMCC hosted a memorial for civil rights icon and education advocate Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes on May 28 in Theatre 2 at 199 Chambers St. The event included tributes and reflections from distinguished guest speakers who shared personal stories of Dr. Dukes, shining a light on her trailblazing activism and dedication to a more equitable society. In his welcoming remarks, BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe said, “Dr. Dukes was, simply put, a force of nature. Her contributions to civil rights, social justice, and community empowerment are immeasurable. For decades, she stood on the front lines—a tireless advocate for the voiceless, a beacon of hope for the marginalized, and a relentless fighter for a more just and equitable society. Her impact resonated far beyond the halls of power and into the lives of everyday people. She understood the transformative power of education, the vital importance of community, and the unwavering strength of collective action.” To watch the entire event, click here.

College Discovery Celebrates Graduates at Special Two-Part Event
BMCC’s College Discovery Program hosted a special two-part event on May 21 in Fiterman Conference Center. First up—"From College Discovery to the World: Reality Manifested"—featured three alumni who went on to complete master’s degrees and are now working in successful careers. The alumni answered questions and networked with the students. The second portion—the Grammeez event—celebrated College Discovery’s graduates. Special recognition was given to students who graduated in two years or less, those who completed more than 45 credits with a GPA of at least 3.7, and those who made the Dean’s List. Other awards recognized counselors and directors. College Discovery friends Evelyn Humphries, Antoinette Middleton, and Jose Romano were also recognized.  


Honors Scholars Program

Honors Scholars Program Celebrates Graduates
BMCC’s Honors Scholars Program hosted a dinner and ceremony on May 29 at the Fiterman Conference Center to celebrate the 2025 graduates of the program, The BMCC Honors Scholars Program is designed to offer high-achieving students' greater freedom to engage in academic exploration and interdisciplinary connections related to their majors, professional goals, and personal interests.  Modern Languages Professor and Honors Scholars Director Eda Henao welcomed attendees to the celebration. Associate Provost Dr. Liesl Jones, who delivered remarks on behalf of BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe, congratulated the graduates on their achievements. BMCC Honors Scholars graduates include: Min Kant Oakkar (Biotechnology), Sophie Faber (Liberal Arts), Kobe Leonor (Writing and Literature), Jahnay Butler (Human Services), Gabriela González (Criminal Justice), Ana Maria Teresa Guerra Sarmiento (Spanish Translation and Interpretation), Darlyn Gomez (Computer Science), Abdoulaye Diallo (Computer Science), Aditya Ali (Business Administration), Witanto Jayaputra (Accounting), Jerome Gayman (Video Arts Technology), Candace Clarke (Communication Studies), Serzh Gevorgian (Business Management), Ronie Pastko (Liberal Arts), Jean Stéphane Kakou (Public and Nonprofit Administration), Kevin Kliza (Political Science), Billy Jack Hoyos Rimarachin (Liberal Arts), Nancy Zapata (Modern Languages with a concentration in Spanish), Samantha He Zhang (Financial Management), Clark Le Compte (Economics), Melisha Robinson (Liberal Arts), and Zhenyi Yu (Liberal Arts).

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Visits BMCC
BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe introduced Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to a group of BMCC students on May 29 at 199 Chambers Street. BMCC served as the setting for an earlier press conference focused on green energy jobs in New York. The College’s rooftop is home to one of Manhattan’s largest public solar arrays. Among the students were representatives from Panther Station, Conexiones, and UMLA, as well as several nursing program graduates who were dressed in their white uniforms in preparation for the College’s pinning ceremony later that day. “BMCC is a great institution,” Senator Schumer said, adding that graduates from BMCC are well prepared to build good, productive, and happy lives.


Apprenticeship

Graduating Apprenticeship Students Recognized at Event
BMCC’s Office of Internships and Experiential Learning hosted an Apprenticeship Recognition Event on May 29 at the Fiterman Conference Center. “Congratulations to all the students being recognized at this event,” said BMCC Vice President of Enrollment Sanjay Ramdath. “This is the culmination of your hard work, dedication, and willingness to embrace the invaluable learning experience that apprenticeship offers.” Vice President Ramdath also thanked the employers who partner with BMCC. Students in BMCC’s Apprenticeship Program gain practical, hands-on job experience while earning college credit—an especially valuable advantage in today’s competitive job market. The 2025 graduating apprentices include Brandon Becerril, Hector Campuzano, Khalilah Hughes, Sincere Morales, Ann Maria Patterson, Mark Robinson, Amir Rodriguez, Damaris Ruiz, Ignacio Valdez, and Joe Vidals. Three students also received special recognition awards for exceptional leadership, resilience, and dedication—demonstrated through impactful work at their apprenticeship host sites. These students are Tomika Copeland (Zurich North America), Khalilah Hughes (Aon), and Gisela Morrows (Aon).


UMLA

UMLA Celebrates Exemplary Leadership and Contributions at Academic Award Recognition Dinner
BMCC’s Urban Male Leadership Academy celebrated its 17th annual Academic Award and Recognition Dinner on May 22 in Richard Harris Terrace. More than 150 students, staff, and faculty were recognized for exemplary leadership and contributions to the College community. In addition to dinner, the event featured a photo booth and live jazz from Sweet-Lee & Co, while BMCC’s Joshua Joseph opened the evening with a powerful rendition of the Black National Anthem. UMLA Director Dr. Ashtian Holmes presented UMLA Vanguard Awards to Melissa Jardine, Federal Work-Study Coordinator, and Carei Thomas, Director of Academic Advisement, for their key contributions to student success at BMCC. The UMLA Legacy Award was presented to BMCC and UMLA alumnus Derrick M. Collison, an entrepreneur and nonprofit executive, who gave a heartfelt speech and shared his personal journey and the impact UMLA has had on his life. Other speakers included Karen Wilson-Stevenson, Vice President, Office for Institutional Advancement; Dr. Marva Craig, Vice President of Student Affairs; Professor James Blake, Counselor; Osairoh Eghiyo-Esere, Student Government Association President; Dr. Janice Zummo, Associate Dean of Academic Support Services; and Jorge Alguera, Assistant Director, CUNY Black Male Initiative.

About Time

Shirley Fiterman Arts Center—Susan Weil: About Time—Opens June 5
The Shirley Fiterman Art Center announced its upcoming exhibition Susan Weil: About Time, a solo show of more than 50 works by artist Susan Weil. This exhibition spans her career from 1949 to the present, and is the first institutional solo presentation of her work in New York City. Time, both literally and metaphorically, is a central theme that threads its way through her more than 70-year practice. Weil cultivated a unique vision that moved back and forth between paper and canvas, traditional materials and experimental techniques, figuration and abstraction, exploring throughout the ever-shifting elements of time, movement, and language. The exhibition opens with a reception on June 5 and will be open until August 9. Also, Susan Weil and Vincent FitzGerald will hold a conversation on June 7 at 11 a.m. Weil and FitzGerald, publisher of limited-edition artist books and prints, will discuss their many collaborations.

Cafeteria Summer Hours Start May 23
The 199 Chambers St. cafeteria is open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cafeteria will also be open on June 6 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Fiterman Café hours are Monday to Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

LinkedIn Learning is an online learning platform designed to assist users with improving business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals. The LinkedIn Learning video library of engaging, top-quality courses taught by industry experts allows users to learn at their own pace. Available courses include Developing Presentation Skills, Learning Time Management Skills, How to Be An Effective Leader, QuickBooks Tutorials for Accountants, Adobe Creative Cloud Tutorials Web/Fashion Designers, AutoCad Tutorial for Engineers, Scripting Languages for the Application Developers and more. Summer and Fall 2025 Advisement and Registration Available Now
Faculty and staff, please encourage students to talk to their advisor to discuss their academic progress and registration. All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialist on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Register Now for Spring 2025 Professional Development Trainings
College Resources, Professional Development and Learning (PDL), in the office of University Human Resources provides professional development opportunities for Spring 2025.

  • PDL Spring Courses: Provided through the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), these courses range from $75 to $150 per person and require supervisory approval. Register online.
  • DCAS Open Enrollment: Citywide training is provided in cultural awareness, management, technology and more.
  • Campus On-Site Training Requests: Custom training sessions can be requested through DCAS.
