BMCC Hosts Harlem Leaders Breakfast
BMCC hosted a Harlem leaders breakfast at the iconic Sylvia's Restaurant on Monday, February 3. This gathering brought together influential non-profit, educational, political, and religious leaders from the Harlem community to meet our esteemed president. The purpose of this gathering was for President Munroe to share his vision for BMCC while fostering healthy partnerships and collaborations with Harlem institutions. Dr. Munroe provided a high-level overview of BMCC sharing invaluable information about the incredible work being done including our study abroad programs, partnership agreements with four-year colleges, and various initiatives aimed at supporting students transitioning to college life. Attendees exchanged ideas and discussed potential initiatives that can pave the way for future projects and opportunities to transform the lives and conditions of Harlem residents. This gathering not only strengthened our ties with the Harlem community but also sparked innovative ideas that will undoubtedly enhance the educational landscape at BMCC.
Professor Sophie Maríñez Wins Prestigious Book Award
“Spirals in the Caribbean, Representing Violence and Connection in Haiti and the Dominican Republic” by BMCC Modern Language Professor, Dr. Sophie Maríñez, was released in 2024 by the University of Pennsylvania Press and just selected to receive the 2025 Frantz Fanon Award for Outstanding Book in Caribbean Thought, by the Caribbean Philosophical Association (CPA). The award ceremony will take place in Martinique in Summer 2025. The central image of the book, the Spiral, resonates deeply with current events, Dr. Maríñez explains. “Because the Spiral is a shape that helps us envision how the past recirculates—deepening and expanding as it adapts to new agendas and power structures—I could make the connection between today’s turbulent anti-immigrant practices and the book's focus on the 2013 ruling in the Dominican Republic that denied birthright citizenship and enabled widespread deportation of their Black citizens. I could also relate it to the Haitian Revolution in the late 18th century, a fight between enslavers and freedom-seekers. Rulings against birthright citizenship are not an attack on immigrants but an attack on the nation itself. The Spiral shows how these connections across time extend beyond the Caribbean.”
