BMCC Student Stephanie Pacheco Named National Youth Poet Laureate BMCC Writing and Literature major Stephanie Pacheco has been named the 2024 National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States by youth literary organization Urban Word. The news was announced during the National Youth Poet Laureate Commencement on April 20 at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. “When I was announced as winner of the National Poet Laureate title, the feeling I had is hard to describe,” said Pacheco. “It was a combination of shock, exuberant joy but most of all, I felt so full of love. Being awarded this title is such a great honor.” Previously, Pacheco, who is originally from the Bronx, was named the 2023 New York City Youth Poet Laureate. BMCC CIS Professors Developing CUNY’s First AI Certificate Program
A team of BMCC Computer Information Systems (CIS) Professors—Ching Song (Don) Wei, Mohammad Azhar, Hao Tang and Yan Chen—have received a three-year, $645,000 Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop CUNY's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) certificate program.The 30-credit AI certificate program will articulate into an AI associate degree program that is currently under development at BMCC.

BMCC Welcomes Liesl B. Jones as Associate Provost
In a message to the College community, President Anthony E. Munroe welcomed Dr. Liesl B. Jones as Associate Provost at BMCC, where she will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. In her new position, Dr. Jones will provide broad-based leadership, planning and oversight to advance the academic mission of BMCC. Reporting to Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Erwin J. Wong, she will work closely with academic leadership to promote and implement opportunities for enhancement in the quality and outcomes of existing academic programs to meet the needs of BMCC students. Economics Majors Present Research at NCUR Conference in California
Three BMCC Economics Majors, each of them mentored by Economics Professor Christine Farias, presented their research projects at the 2024 National Council of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) Conference in Long Beach, Ca., on April 9 and 10. NCUR is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study by hosting the annual conference for students.
Students Tour Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site and Gain Insight Into Evolving Penal System
Over 30 Criminal Justice majors took a day trip on April 19 to the Eastern State Penitentiary historic site, a former prison in Philadelphia that operated from 1829 to 1971. “The outing was both educationally and professionally enriching, offering insights into the history of the penitentiary and its role in shaping the modern penal system,” said Criminal Justice Professor Satenik V. Margaryan, who accompanied the students and planned the event along with Criminal Justice Professor Shenique Davis and Antonette McKain, Director of Evening/Weekend and Off-Site Programs at BMCC.
Spring Founders Festival Showcases Student Entrepreneurs
Over 250 guests, including BMCC students, faculty and staff, attended the BMCC Spring Founders Festival Sustainable Garden Party presented by BMCC and Blackstone LaunchPad, on April 16 at the Richard Harris Terrace. Thirteen student businesses and one local business showcased their ventures, competing for $10,000 in cash prizes including: Royally Sweet Designs, Della’s exotic pepper sauce, ID DIE 4 TIE DYE, Glossy girl goddess, Juiced It!, It’s Chef Lex, Nana’s, Gemz, Ringz & Tingz, 2 Loud Boutique, Luna Opus, Elmo’s Mat Club & Elmo’s Wrestling Supply, Queen Fresh, Abyss Studio and The Paint Club. One local business was also present, Breuchkelen Eclectic. The event celebrated entrepreneurship and community collaboration, with diverse partners contributing to the vibrant atmosphere. MEA Interns Meet One-on-One With Industry Reps for Portfolio Review
The Media Arts and Technology Department (MEA) sponsored a portfolio review session as part of its internship program on May 1. Students rotated table-to-table around the Maker Space room at 199 Chambers Street to share their portfolios in one-on-one sessions with preferred partner-representatives from Omnicom, StoryCorps, MediaMkRS and other for-profit and non-profit companies. The students also met with faculty who have industry experience. Most of the close to 20 student participants were Spring 2024 interns from MEA’s Career Connected Learning (CCL) program and are majoring in Video Arts and Technology, Multimedia Programming and Design or Animation and Motion Graphics. Many are paid through Federal Work Study. Prior to the event, the student interns created resumes, bios and portfolios as part of their CCL Lab (CCLL). They also created messaging on video, social media and other platforms to let other students know about the MEA internship program. Leading up to the portfolio review session, the interns attended career-related field trips to BBDO NY, CUNY TV, Omnicom Health Group (OHG), Titmouse animation and Perception Studios. The CCLL program is part of the CUNY Inclusive Economy Initiative, (CIE) a joint venture between CUNY's Chancellor and the Office of the Mayor of NYC.
5K Event a Huge Success
The BMCC Health Education Department and Student Affairs hosted the annual 5K Steps Challenge event in Hudson River Park on May 1. "Our 5K event was a huge success, with over 70 participants,” said Health Education Professor Alex Evangelista. “Walking alongside the participants, it was great to see everyone cheering each other on and showing BMCC pride. We can’t wait for our next 5k in the Fall."
BMCC Welcomes The Next Step Public Charter School Students for Campus Tour
The BMCC Recruitment and Outreach team welcomed students from The Next Step (TNS) Public Charter School from Washington D.C. on April 30. Thirty-seven visitors took a comprehensive campus tour, enjoyed lunch, and participated in an Admissions information session. The campus tour experience provided valuable insights into the vibrant BMCC community and academic offerings.

Economics Professor Christine Farias Selected for CAORC Faculty Development Seminar in Mongolia
Economics Professor Christine Farias has received an award to attend the Council for American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) faculty development seminar in Mongolia from May 28 until June 15, 2024. Professor Farias is one of 14 faculty members from across the United States selected to participate in 'Climate Change and Public Health: What does Climate Change Mean for the People of Mongolia?'. The Overseas Faculty Development Seminars are fully-funded experiences that help faculty and administrators at U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions gain international experience with the aim of developing and improving international courses, curricula, and teaching materials at their home institutions. |

Three BMCC research Professors—Lalitha Jayant (Science), Johannes Familton (Math) and Abel Navarro (Science)—and their students, will present research activities and projects at the 2024 Hudson River Park Submerge Marine Science Festival May 17 and 18 at Pier 84 in Hudson River Park. Don’t miss the 2024 BMCC Annual Research Symposium (BARS) on Wednesday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 199 Chambers Street. Keynote speaker and microbiologist Dr. Jenny Paredes is a former BMCC professor whose expertise is in the fields of immunology and oncology. She serves as a staff scientist at City of Hope, Los Angeles, dividing her time between research on the microbiome and training junior investigators. In the future, Dr. Parades plans to become an independent investigator and to study nutrition in the context of racial-cancer disparities. BARS will showcase student posters reflecting their faculty-mentored research projects ranging from environmental science, immunology, business, engineering, computer science, economics, humanities and more. Faculty and Staff Invited to Volunteer as Judges for BARS Symposium
Faculty and staff are invited to volunteer as a judge for student research poster presentations during the BMCC Annual Research Symposium (BARS) to be held May 15 in Richard Harris Terrace. Poster presentations will be judged according to a rubric that will measure the quality of the student’s posters and the student’s ability to present. Each poster will have a total of three judges. Volunteer judges not required to have any special content knowledge of the student researcher’s discipline to judge the quality of their poster and presentation. Faculty that are mentoring student researchers are not eligible to judge posters. To volunteer, click here.
