Asian Heritage Month 2024 Offers Fashion, Sports, Film and Fellowship
A robust month of events commemorating Asian Heritage Month includes a talk by activist and filmmaker Jan Lee; community pickleball, table tennis and volleyball matches; film screenings that represent the rich diversity of Asian culture around the world and more. Modern Language Colloquium

Modern Language Colloquium Explores the Power of Language in Professional Settings
The BMCC Department of Modern Languages (MLD) hosted the XXVI Modern Languages Department Colloquium, “Translating the Power of Languages in the Professional World,” April 2 in Richard Harris Terrace. Speaker topics vital to students' journeys included how to gain cultural competency by studying abroad, internship opportunities and how to enhance a resumé with a BMCC Language Certificate. The keynote speaker was Fordham University Senior Lecturer and Language Program Director for the Department of Modern Languages Alessia Valfredini. Guest speakers from BMCC included Sandra Cortez, Sharon Reid and Gretchen Simmons from the Internships and Experiential Learning Office; MLD Professor Evelin Gamarra Martínez, and Employer Relations Coordinator in the Center for Career Development, Michelle Kismatali. Sabina Lepre Leva, a litigation analyst at Sullivan and Cromwell spoke, and BMCC students Jeraldine Diyarza, John Guzman, Anahí K. Benítez H., Linda Juárez and Caroline Uribe shared their experiences. The organizing committee included MLD Professors Patrizia Comello Perry, Berenice Darwish and Edward Nevarez.

National Poetry Month: Four BMCC Community Members Have Served as Poet Laureate
April is National Poetry month. Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month celebrates poets’ integral role in the country’s culture. In addition to being home to a number of poets and offering poetry courses, BMCC faculty, students and alumni have been appointed as esteemed poet laureates throughout New York. Pickleball

VPs Continue Pickleball Winning Streak
As part of BMCC’s Asian Heritage month, the college hosted a pickleball tournament on April 4 in the gymnasium at 199 Chambers St. During the doubles open challenge rounds, teammates Erwin Wong, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Vice President for Student Affairs Marva Craig defeated challengers Jay Francisco, Senior Career Advisor and Ian Wentworth, Student Affairs, Life Manager for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. On Friday, April 5, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled New York City and the Northeast. After the devastating earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, GIS (Geographic Information Science) was used to assist rescue operations. BMCC's GIS program is co-coordinated by the Social Sciences, Criminal Justice and Human Services Department and the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department.

Join Now: 2024 Couch to 5K Step Challenge Leads Up to 5K on May 1
The Health Education Department and Division of Student Affairs are hosting a steps challenge from April 3 through April 29 that leads up to an in-person 5K that starts in the BMCC gym at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1 and is open to all members of the BMCC community. Learn more here. Register here.


Tax Let Students Know: Last Chance for Free, Virtual Tax Assistance Is April 8
Staff from the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance have been helping currently enrolled BMCC students e-file their income tax returns in free, self-help Zoom sessions. The last session is Monday, April 8. The students will need an active email account, photo ID, social security number, proof of income, information related to claimed credits, their 2022 tax return and banking information for direct deposit. The University Human Resources, Professional Development & Learning Office provides free professional development opportunities for all employees, including these upcoming workshops presented by the NYC Commission on Human Rights. Visit here to register for either one:

  • Working with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Communities:
    Monday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

    This workshop creates awareness that transgender New Yorkers face discrimination in all areas covered by the City Human Rights Law and they must be treated with dignity and respect. The workshop covers protections under the City Human Rights Law, briefly addresses federal and state law and reviews in detail correct terminology when addressing the LBGTQI community.
  • Human Rights Law and Age Discrimination in Employment:
    Wednesday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    This workshop provides information about age discrimination in employment and protections against age discrimination under the City Human Rights Law for all workers. Examples of age discrimination in employment are discussed, as well as best practices for employers.

Award-Winning Modern Language Professor Presents at the CUNY Graduate Center, April 10
Dr. Ángeles Donoso Macaya—an educator, researcher and human rights activist from Santiago, Chile—is both a Professor of Spanish at BMCC and Professor of Latin American Cultures and Visual Studies in the Ph.D. Program in Latin American, Iberian and Latino Cultures at The CUNY Graduate Center. On April 10 at 6 p.m., Dr. Donoso Macaya will present her autobiographical essay “Lanallwe” at The CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue in midtown Manhattan. Dr. Donoso Macaya is the author of “La insubordinación de la fotografía” (Metales Pesados 2021) / “The Insubordination of Photography: Documentary Practices under Chile’s Dictatorship” (UP Florida 2020), which received the Best Book Award in Latin American Visual Culture at LASA (Latin America Studies Association) 2021 and Best Book Award in Recent History and Memory at LASA 2022. She was awarded the 2021 Mellon/ACLS Community College Faculty Fellowship for a book-length project with the working title, “The Expanding Photographic Archive of Feminist Movements in Chile.” The April 10 event is free, open to the public and hosted by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies (CLACLS) at The Graduate Center. Join ACFE Fraud Conference, April 12
The New York chapter of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) will present its Spring Fraud Conference on Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fiterman Conference Center, Room 1306/7. The event will provide networking opportunities and raise community awareness regarding fraud prevention and risk, cybercrime, governance, data analytics, ethics, forensics and more. Hosts are the BMCC Internships and Experiential Learning office and Accounting Department. There is no registration fee for BMCC students, faculty or staff. Register here.

Naturalization Would Your Students Benefit From a Free Naturalization Clinic? Registration Deadline Is April 11
The BMCC Advocacy and Resource Center (ARC), the City Bar Justice Center and Fragomen, a law practice, will sponsor a free naturalization clinic on April 18 at 199 Chambers Street, Richard Harris Terrace, from 2 until 5 p.m. Students who are permanent residents can attend the clinic and work with a licensed attorney to complete their U.S. Citizenship Naturalization application. Encourage Students to Apply for BMCC Foundation Scholarship by April 21
Student applications for the BMCC Foundation Scholarship will be accepted through April 21. Eligible candidates receive up to $3,200 annually. To qualify, students must be matriculated, pursuing their first college degree at BMCC and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Full-time student applicants should have completed a minimum of 12 credits by the conclusion of the Spring 2024 semester, while part-time students should have completed at least 20 credits by that time. Cybersecurity Catch Cybersecurity Threats Before They Catch You 
Faculty and staff are strongly urged to complete a 40-minute Cybersecurity Awareness Training course via Blackboard. The training presents best practices in safeguarding personal as well as CUNY and BMCC data. It explains how to recognize cybersecurity threats such as phishing, spam and account breaches. To get started, log into Blackboard using your CUNYfirst credentials. Summer and Fall 2024 Advisement and Registration is Open
Faculty and staff, please encourage students to talk to their advisor to discuss their academic progress and registration. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialist on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). CUNY Extends Decision Day Deadline for New Students
CUNY has extended the "Decision Day" deadline for new students to accept admissions offers, giving applicants until June 1 to determine their full financial aid package before they decide. Current students can visit CUNY’s FAFSA guide for news about financial aid and tools to plan their educational future. Annual Step Challenge Is Back: Register by April 5
During WorkWell’s four-week step challenge, “Let’s Move NYC,” thousands of City employees will walk, run or roll towards their fitness goals from April 22 through May 19. Register here by April 5.


Gender-Based Violence Training Joins ESPARC and WVP Mandated Trainings

  • The state- and CUNY-mandated Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) and Workplace Violence Prevention Training (WVP) are available for the 2023-2024 academic year. All part-time employees, including adjuncts, as well as full-time employees must complete both trainings by May 31.
  • The state- and CUNY-mandated Gender Based Violence Training (GBVT) is required for HR professionals and managers with at least one direct report. Full and part-time employees notified by email about GBVT must complete it by May 31.

BMCC Runners Earn a First for the College
Business Administration major Lea Reimer and Accounting major Tatenda Chikanyairo are BMCC's first-ever runners to qualify for the national round of competitions. Their next meet is the 2024 NJCAA Div. III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Utica, New York. Read more here.
