Kaplan

Five BMCC Students Named Kaplan Educational Foundation Leadership Scholars
Five BMCC students—more than any other community college in New York—have been named to the 2023/2024 cohort of Kaplan Educational Foundation (KEF) Leadership scholars. The students (pictured above, L-R) include Business Administration major Barbara Abreu Bicelis, Ethnic and Race Studies major Joely Castillo, Computer Science major Anthony Chimbay, Liberal Arts major Shayla Rose Jimenez and Psychology major Genesis Torres. Established in 2006, the Kaplan Leadership Program helps historically underrepresented community college students complete their associate degree and successfully transfer and go on to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree at the nation’s most highly selective schools.

Students Brainstorm Project Ideas at Participatory Budgeting Event
More than 40 BMCC students spent the early evening hours of November 15 at Fiterman Hall brainstorming ideas for projects in their community that could be eligible for funding through the city’s $5 million participatory budgeting process. Ideas generated during the early phases will be developed into ballot proposals, which will be voted on by residents in each borough. Winning projects will be implemented starting in July of 2024. The BMCC event was held in partnership with the NYC Civic Engagement Commission. New York City residents have until November 19 to submit ideas online. BMCC Business department Chair Mahatapa Palit participated in a panel focused on apprenticeships through public-private partnerships. In January 2023, Mayor Eric L. Adams announced the goal of connecting 30,000 New Yorkers to apprenticeships by 2030.
