Aspen Top 150 Recognized for Innovation, Equity and More, BMCC Is Named Among 150 Colleges Eligible for the 2025 Aspen Prize
BMCC was selected from 1,000 community colleges nationwide to be included among 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among community colleges. The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years. In 2021, BMCC was named one of the Aspen Award’s Top Ten finalists.   
Mubasshira Four Students Win $1,000 Each in BMCC Blackstone LaunchPad Competition
Four BMCC students—Digital Marketing major Eric Salim Marlie, Business Administration major Afia Mubasshira (shown left), Business Management major Leilani Highsmith and Business Administration major Danilsa Sala—have won $1,000 each in an annual virtual competition conducted by the BMCC Blackstone LaunchPad program. Student entrepreneurs who would like to learn more about the BMCC LaunchPad program can visit here. Panther Partners

Panther Partner Students and Mentors Share Insight; First Gen College Day Is Nov. 8
The BMCC Panther Partners program provides a welcoming cohort experience for students who will be the first in their families to hold a college degree from an institution in the United States. On November 8, the BMCC Panther Partners program invites the college community to a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria at 199 Chambers Street in honor of First Gen College Day, a commemorative day launched by the Center for First-Generation Student Success along with the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE). “Being the first in my immediate family to attend college means that I’m paving the way for a better future for my family and community,” says Panther Partner mentee Bianca Claircidor. Staff and faculty interested in being a Panther Partner mentor can visit here. Bill Russo U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Bill Russo to Speak at BMCC on November 8  
Students are invited to participate in a conversation with Bill Russo, Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Global Public Affairs at the U.S. State Department on November 8 at 2:15 p.m. in Room S-341 at 199 Chambers Street. Assistant Secretary Russo has led a distinguished career having served as advisor to the current Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Senior Advisor to then-National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and as Deputy Communications Director for Press on the Biden-Harris campaign. Space is limited for this special event so please RSVP as soon as possible. For more information, contact Doug Israel, Director of Government and Community Relations at disrael@bmcc.cuny.edu.

Encourage Students to Explore Options on Modern Languages Day, November 3
The Modern Language Department celebrates Modern Language Day on Friday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace. Faculty and staff will be on hand to talk to prospective Modern Language majors about associate degree programs in French, Italian, Spanish and Spanish Translation & Interpretation, as well as a certificate program in Spanish/English Translation & Interpretation. Join and Bring Your Students to the BMCC STEM Innovation Challenge for Social Good
On Saturday, November 4 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace, BMCC’s first STEM Innovation Challenge will host a competition with student teams engaging their technical competence and creativity to address real-world problems at BMCC, collaborating on solutions that support the larger social good. This event is sponsored by the BMCC Technology Learning Community Project, an NSF-funded project, as well as the BMCC Success and Innovation Lab, the Computer Information Systems department and the BMCC Computer Programming Club.

Poverty Students Giving Voice to Poverty: Submission Deadline November 5

CUNY Employees: Register by Nov. 6 for Professional Development Conference
The University Human Resources, Professional Development & Learning (PDL) will host the 2023 Professional Development Conference, “Bridging the Growing Divide: Working Towards Inclusivity & Collaboration,” on November 9 and November 10 virtually on Zoom. The Free Exchange of Ideas in the Era of Book Banning: A Conversation on Impacted Communities Nov. 14
The Queer Communities Faculty Interest Group (FIG) invites you to join them on November 14 at 4 p.m. for an in-person and virtual conversation about book banning and book challenges in the United States. Guest speakers include New York Times-bestselling author Eliot Schrefer and Melody Frese the Library Coordinator for Ladue School District, a suburban school district outside of St. Louis, Missouri. The in-person event will be held in Room 302 at the Murray Building or attend via Zoom by registering here.

Trainings on “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” and “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism”: Virtual Sessions offered November 17 and November 28
The Office of Compliance and Diversity invites BMCC students, faculty and staff to attend two trainings presented by the New York City Commission on Human Rights.  

  • A virtual session of “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” will be offered on November 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 
  • A virtual session of “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism” will be offered on November 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  

The workshops will also elaborate on protections for Muslim and Jewish New Yorkers against discrimination under the City Human Rights Law. Please fill out this form to register for the trainings.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Visit The Clothesline Project, a Visual Display of Support for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence, Nov. 1 - Dec. 2
Stop by the 3rd-floor hallway gallery near Room S-343 at 199 Chambers Street from November 1 through December 2 to view The Clothesline Project, a visual display that raises awareness of gender-based violence. Each shirt is made by a survivor of violence or by someone who has lost a loved one to violence. If you or a loved one is impacted by domestic violence, you can access support through the Women’s Resource Center (WRC), Room S-340 at 199 Chambers Street, (212) 220-8166, and staff can connect you with on- and off-campus resources. The BMCC Counseling Center, Room S-343 at 199 Chambers Street, (212) 220-8140, also supports students who experience gender-based violence—which includes sexual assault, sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking.

PSC CUNY Office of Sponsored Programs Encourages Faculty & Staff to Submit PSC-CUNY Grant Proposals by Dec. 15
The Office of Sponsored Programs would like to encourage all faculty and instructional staff to consider submitting a PSC-CUNY Research Grant. Last year, 43 BMCC faculty won over $200,000 in PSC-CUNY grant awards to fund their research projects. The deadline is December 15. Find out more at the Office of Sponsored Programs webpage

Faculty Encouraged to Nominate Students for Transfer Scholars Network: Deadline Dec. 31
The Office of Academic Affairs is recruiting students for BMCC’s second cohort of the Aspen Institute’s Transfer Scholars Network (TSN). TSN aims to provide students with direct connection to senior admission representatives at highly selective partner institutions and personalized support to help them navigate the transfer admissions process. Learn more about TSN and the opportunity for BMCC students by visiting here. The Admissions staff is calling all future BMCC Panthers to step onto the main campus of 199 Chambers Street for a college experience at the Fall Open House on Thursday, November 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. Prospective students and their families are welcome for a night full of activities, including a tour of our vibrant campus, information about financial resources and support programs, and a chance to chat with our dynamic faculty to explore possible major and career options. BMCC Open Enrollment November 1-30 
BMCC’s Open Enrollment period is from November 1 through 30.  Enrollment forms are accepted through the Human Resources’ CUNYfirst secure document upload for the Open Enrollment/Annual Fall Transfer Period. Changes requested during the Open Enrollment/Transfer Period will be effective January 1, 2024 and the new payroll deduction, if applicable, will begin in January. 

Gender-Based Violence Training Joins ESPARC and WVP Mandated Trainings

  • The state- and CUNY-mandated Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) and Workplace Violence Prevention Training (WVP) are available for the 2023-2024 academic year. All part-time employees, including adjuncts, must complete both trainings by the end of the current semester. Full-time employees have until May 31 to complete the trainings.
  • The state- and CUNY-mandated Gender Based Violence Training (GBVT) is required for HR professionals and managers with at least one direct report. Full-time employees notified by email about GBVT must complete it by May 31; part-time employees who are contacted have until the end of the current semester.
