Four Students Win $1,000 Each in BMCC Blackstone LaunchPad Competition

Panther Partner Students and Mentors Share Insight; First Gen College Day Is Nov. 8
The BMCC Panther Partners program provides a welcoming cohort experience for students who will be the first in their families to hold a college degree from an institution in the United States. On November 8, the BMCC Panther Partners program invites the college community to a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. in the cafeteria at 199 Chambers Street in honor of First Gen College Day, a commemorative day launched by the Center for First-Generation Student Success along with the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE). “Being the first in my immediate family to attend college means that I’m paving the way for a better future for my family and community,” says Panther Partner mentee Bianca Claircidor. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Bill Russo to Speak at BMCC on November 8
Students are invited to participate in a conversation with Bill Russo, Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Global Public Affairs at the U.S. State Department on November 8 at 2:15 p.m. in Room S-341 at 199 Chambers Street. Assistant Secretary Russo has led a distinguished career having served as advisor to the current Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Senior Advisor to then-National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and as Deputy Communications Director for Press on the Biden-Harris campaign. Join and Bring Your Students to the BMCC STEM Innovation Challenge for Social Good
On Saturday, November 4 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace, BMCC’s first STEM Innovation Challenge will host a competition with student teams engaging their technical competence and creativity to address real-world problems at BMCC, collaborating on solutions that support the larger social good. This event is sponsored by the BMCC Technology Learning Community Project, an NSF-funded project, as well as the BMCC Success and Innovation Lab, the Computer Information Systems department and the BMCC Computer Programming Club.

The Free Exchange of Ideas in the Era of Book Banning: A Conversation on Impacted Communities Nov. 14
The Queer Communities Faculty Interest Group (FIG) invites you to join them on November 14 at 4 p.m. for an in-person and virtual conversation about book banning and book challenges in the United States. Guest speakers include New York Times-bestselling author Eliot Schrefer and Melody Frese the Library Coordinator for Ladue School District, a suburban school district outside of St. Louis, Missouri. Trainings on “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” and “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism”: Virtual Sessions offered November 17 and November 28
The Office of Compliance and Diversity invites BMCC students, faculty and staff to attend two trainings presented by the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
- A virtual session of “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” will be offered on November 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- A virtual session of “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism” will be offered on November 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The workshops will also elaborate on protections for Muslim and Jewish New Yorkers against discrimination under the City Human Rights Law. Please fill out this form to register for the trainings.
Visit The Clothesline Project, a Visual Display of Support for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence, Nov. 1 - Dec. 2
Stop by the 3rd-floor hallway gallery near Room S-343 at 199 Chambers Street from November 1 through December 2 to view The Clothesline Project, a visual display that raises awareness of gender-based violence. Each shirt is made by a survivor of violence or by someone who has lost a loved one to violence. If you or a loved one is impacted by domestic violence, you can access support through the Women’s Resource Center (WRC), Room S-340 at 199 Chambers Street, (212) 220-8166, and staff can connect you with on- and off-campus resources. The BMCC Counseling Center, Room S-343 at 199 Chambers Street, (212) 220-8140, also supports students who experience gender-based violence—which includes sexual assault, sexual misconduct, dating violence, domestic violence and stalking.

The Office of Academic Affairs is recruiting students for BMCC’s second cohort of the Aspen Institute’s Transfer Scholars Network (TSN). TSN aims to provide students with direct connection to senior admission representatives at highly selective partner institutions and personalized support to help them navigate the transfer admissions process.
