The BMCC Foundation Board of Directors will host the 2023 Gala, “Invest in a Future: Empowering Student Success” on Wednesday, October 25 2023 at Tribeca 360, 10 Desbrosses Street, New York. “Proceeds from the Gala provide scholarships to hundreds of hard-working students who demonstrate their courage and commitment to education in the face of many obstacles,” said Karen Wilson-Stevenson, Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement. BMCC Celebrates Faculty Tenure and Promotion at Fiterman Rooftop Event
Thirty-nine BMCC faculty members were celebrated during the 2023 Faculty Tenure and Promotion Recognition event that took place at the Fiterman Hall rooftop terrace on October 3. President Anthony E. Munroe and Senior Vice President and Provost Erwin Wong acknowledged the faculty accomplishments during their remarks. Members of the Cabinet, Department Chairs and administrators as well as staff from the Office of Academic Affairs joined the celebration. MOU With Danish Secondary School Brings Future Exchange Opportunities
Representatives from Aalborg Gymnasium—a Danish secondary school—visited BMCC on September 28 and September 29 to discuss future collaborations including a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BMCC’s International Student Services, Continuing Education and Workforce Development as well as the Business Management department. The official visit was sponsored by a European grant. The representatives spent time observing classes in BMCC’s CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP). The MOU, which is expected to be finalized in October, will include student and faculty exchange opportunities as well as international workforce training for Danish faculty educators.
BMCC Students and Alumni Shine at CUNY Chancellor’s State of the University Address
The BMCC Jazz Ensemble performed at CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez’s 2023 State of the University address at Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work in East Harlem on October 3. The Chancellor was introduced by BMCC graduate Gesy Duran (shown above), who is now at Lehman College (CUNY). The Chancellor called the BMCC Jazz Ensemble (shown above), who performed at the event, an example of student and faculty talent and a reminder that CUNY is not just a series of academic institutions but the starting point for student artists, musicians, engineers, doctors and so many other professionals who keep our city ticking. Manhattan EOC Holds Partnership Breakfast
The SUNY Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center held its Partnership Breakfast in the art gallery of the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building in Harlem on October 4. “Regaining our shared momentum, working collaboratively, and investing in the well-being of students” was the moving theme felt throughout the gallery. Anthony Watson, Manhattan EOC Executive Director, shared the center’s major projects and accomplishments and the importance of working collaboratively with longstanding relationships and forging new ones. New York State Assembly Member Al Taylor shared his thoughts on the importance of education. Alumnae, including Jessica Cuba, Latricia Mercer, and Stephanie McGraw gave testimonies of their successes, the impact the Manhattan EOC has had on their educational journey and the importance of the program to the broader community.
Black Exhaustion: Artist and Curator Conversation October 18
The Shirley Fiterman Art Center at Fiterman Hall will host a conversation between Black Exhaustion artist Noel W. Anderson and curator and writer Barbara Pollack on October 18 at 6 p.m. Noel W Anderson explores the socially constructed formation of Black male identity through American media in Black Exhaustion, a monographic exhibition of his work on view at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center through December 2. The College will be closed on Monday, October 9, 2023, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The day (also known as Columbus Day) is a scheduled holiday, will be excused without charge, for Instructional Staff in Non-Teaching functions, Civil Service: Clerical, Administrative, Professional, Custodial, Stores-Stock, [Campus Security excused without charge subject to essential scheduling], Skilled Trades, and Career and Salary Plan Titles. Hourly employees will be paid based on time worked only. |
October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
BMCC will recognize Domestic Violence Awareness with resources and activities presented throughout October. Please take advantage of the college's partnership with the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, which is hosting virtual workshops including Domestic Violence 101, a webinar/half-hour lunch-and-learn that will address NYS Executive Order #17, and the protections of New York's Gender-Based Violence and the Workplace Policy for state workers. BMCC Hosts Events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held each October, aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease that affects one in eight women in the United States every year. Known for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs aimed at: supporting people diagnosed with breast cancer, including metastatic breast cancer educating people about breast cancer risk factors, and stressing the importance of regular screening. BMCC Employees Invited to Dr. Javier Ávila’s The Trouble with My Name October 18
CUNY University Human Resources Diversity Dialogues series will host poet and professor Dr. Javier Ávila’s dynamic show, The Trouble with My Name on October 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Technology Center, 395 Hudson Street in Manhattan. The in-person and virtual event, in honor of Hispanic Heritage month, is open to all CUNY employees. The deadline to register for in-person attendance is October 10. The virtual registration deadline registration is October 17. The Trouble with My Name examines the issues of language, race, and social justice in an eye-opening performance where Ávila engages the audience as he tells the story of his life and reads poetry that illustrates what it means to be the American of the future. Ávila’s show breaks barriers and embraces the diversity of a nation whose history is rich and colorful. The message transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity, and geography. It is a show not to be missed. |

Trainings on “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” and “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism”: Virtual Sessions offered November 17 and November 28
The Office of Compliance and Diversity invites BMCC students, faculty and staff to attend two trainings presented by the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
- A virtual session of “Understanding Muslim Experiences and Combating Anti-Muslim Bias” will be offered on November 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Monday, October 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Fiterman Hall, Rooms 1404/05/06: “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism" will address antisemitism as well as its impact on Jewish New Yorkers and the larger society. It will introduce Jewish history and practices and outline best practices for working with Jewish New Yorkers.
- A virtual session of “Understanding Jewish Experiences and Antisemitism” will be offered on November 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The workshops will also elaborate on protections for Muslim and Jewish New Yorkers against discrimination under the City Human Rights Law. Please fill out this form to register for the trainings.
Grow with Google HIS Career Readiness Program Block Party October 11
The BMCC Center for Career Development will host a block party to celebrate year three of the Grow with Google HSI Career Readiness Program on October 11 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Richard Harris Terrace. During the 2022 academic year, BMCC ranked in participation among community colleges. At the event, students can network with their fellow classmates, enjoy hot food, and be entered to win Google Chromebooks, MTA metrocards, t-shirts and more.
