Project Impact

Trinity Church Wall Street Awards $450K to Project Impact at BMCC
As part of its latest wave of philanthropic giving, Trinity Church Wall Street has named BMCC a grantee in the category “Racial Justice,” awarding $450,000 to the Research Foundation of The City University of New York, and earmarking those funds for Project Impact at BMCC. Project Impact connects BMCC students who have been impacted by the legal system with a mentor, a supportive community and access to resources that enable them to thrive in college.

Research

BMCC Students Conduct Research with Lower Manhattan Neighbor, Hudson River Park
BMCC overlooks the Hudson River and is a close neighbor of the Hudson River Park and National Estuarine Research Reserve. This provides research opportunities for aspiring environmentalists, research scientists and others at the college. It also reflects a CUNY partnership that engages faculty and students in hands-on research in Hudson River Park. Recently, BMCC faculty and staff took a workshop at the Wet Lab aquarium at Hudson River Park's River Project at Pier 40, just across West Street from BMCC's Chambers Street campus. In addition, Science major Vivian Chavez was accepted as a field science assistant with the Hudson River Park Trust, and Science major Brandon Campos received the Tibor Polgar Fellowship from the Hudson River Foundation to conduct research with Science Professor Abel Navarro on the elimination of heavy metals from the Hudson River, using agricultural waste. MEOC Celebrates the Class of 2023 at Commencement Ceremony
The SUNY Manhattan Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC), which is administered by BMCC, hosted a commencement ceremony for the Class of 2023 at El Museo del Barrio in Manhattan on June 15. “MEOC programs lead to career success,” said BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe in a message to the graduates. “The skills you have acquired at the MEOC have prepared you well for entry into some of this country’s most thriving areas of employment.” Many of the graduates will be entering colleges such as Hostos Community College, Brooklyn College and BMCC.  MEOC Executive Director Anthony Watson commended the graduates for their hard work, commitment and determination. “You truly deserve this day, and to be recognized for not giving up on your goals and ambitions,” said Watson. This year’s keynote speaker was Athena Moore, Vice President of Community Engagement at the Municipal Credit Union. MEOC, which delivers student-centered academic and workforce development programs, is also a gateway to further education, career achievement, personal growth and self-sufficiency for adult learners.  MEOC is located at 163 W. 125th Street in Harlem.  Learn more about MEOC here.

Expert Office of Public Affairs Seeks Faculty and Staff Experts for Media Opportunities
The Office of Public Affairs is seeking faculty and staff who are comfortable speaking to the press and having their work or research pitched to outside media sources, when it is relevant to today's news cycle. Also, in an effort to make a reporter's search for experts more seamless, Public Affairs is working to redesign its faculty and staff experts’ website.

Members of the media will be able to scan the college's experts' list and connect with a faculty or staff member's short biography that includes a headshot, some stand-out credits and compelling evidence of expert insight.

Are you a potential BMCC Expert?

  • Does your work at BMCC offer unique insight into today’s news headlines?
  • Are you a faculty or staff member who has spearheaded a unique and successful student program or service, and you have insight to share about that process?
  • Does your funded research, recently released book or article, academic contribution or other work provide a fresh perspective on gender and racial equity, the economy, environmental justice, STEM discoveries, innovative workforce training, immigration, health care, societal forces and other issues trending in the culture and general news?
  • Do you have expertise specific to community college student success, the culture and future of community colleges, and related topics that are the focus of higher education trade publications?

Mandatory considerations include:

  • Are you available by cell phone at any time (within reason) outside of work hours and are you willing to respond promptly?
  • Are you comfortable being on camera, speaking in a podcast or being quoted in an article, and do you consider yourself an easy-to-follow spokesperson who enjoys breaking down complex issues for a general audience?
  • Is your faculty page updated to showcase your recent accomplishments?
  • Does your faculty page include a recent photo, and if not, would you be willing to provide or take part in a quick photoshoot for a recent head shot?

If you are interested, please send a brief email responding to the above points to publicaffairs@bmcc.cuny.edu by August 1, 2023. We look forward to hearing from you.
