Vanique Davis and Eduardo Lebron

Two BMCC Students Selected for Community College Global Affairs Fellowship in Washington D.C. 
Vanique Davis, Linguistics and Literacy major and Eduardo Lebron, Computer Network Technology major have been selected to participate in the Community College Global Affairs Fellowship (CCGAF) this summer in Washington D.C. Lebron and Davis, who both graduate this Spring, are among 30 fellows selected out of more than 140 applicants. The CCGAF is a paid summer enrichment and mentorship program that expands access to global education opportunities and international affairs careers for community college, transfer and non-traditional students. The fellowship is funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe Participates in EducationUSA Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Forum
BMCC President Anthony E. Munroe with Vice President of Enrollment Management Sanjay Ramdath and Assistant Director of Admission, Recruitment and International Outreach Kim Vo joined representatives from more than 70 higher education institutions from across the United States at the 2023 EducationUSA Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Forum held May 4 to 6 in Cape Town, South Africa. EducationUSA, which is administered by the U.S. Department of State, focuses on promoting the nearly 4,000 accredited higher education institutions in the United States to international students.

Annual Research Symposium

BMCC Students Showcase Faculty-Mentored Research at Annual Research Symposium
The BMCC Annual Research Symposium (BARS) was held May 10 in Room N-453 as well as Richard Harris Terrace at 199 Chambers Street. The event highlights BMCC faculty-mentored research from across all academic disciplines. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Devon Collins, a noted scientist, educator and program manager from Rockefeller University. Research topics ranged from environmental data to HIV and copper remnants in the ocean to business proposals as well as microeconomics and the study of outer galaxies in space. “BARS gives students a chance to showcase the hard work they’ve done throughout the year, and it also allows them to network with their peers, to talk with faculty members about their work,” said Dr. Odaelys Pollard, Director of Research programs at BMCC. “It’s also a good opportunity to fine tune their communications skills and to see all of the other students’ work.”

BMCC Festival

Student Filmmakers Showcase Their Skills in BMCC Festival
The Spring 2023 BMCC Film Festival, organized by the college’s Cinema Arts Club, was held Friday, May 5 in BMCC’s Theatre 2. Sixty-two films were submitted and 37 of those were selected for the competitive section. The festival also included a non-competitive 2D and 3D animation showcase which included 18 short films. “Every semester, we have this festival and each time we screen the new batch of films, I am amazed at the creativity, technical expertise and thoughtful editing they reflect,” says documentary filmmaker and Media Arts and Technology Professor Anastassios Rigopoulos.

BMCC Celebrates 2023 Commencement June 8 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn
BMCC will celebrate its 2023 commencement ceremony on June 8 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Graduates must arrive at 7:30 a.m. and doors open for guests at 8 a.m. For more details, including cap and gown distribution details, visit the commencement webpage.

Asian American Studies across CUNY: Reflections, Connections, Futures Symposium May 12 at Fiterman Hall 
The Asian American/Asian Research Institute (AAARI) is hosting a day-long symposium to reflect upon the histories of this work, build connection and community, and collectively vision the future possibilities and directions for Asian American studies at CUNY from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 12 in Fiterman Hall. Featured events will include a conversation between author Rajiv Mohabir, author of Antiman: a Hybrid Memoir (the inaugural selection for the new AAARI Reads program) and DJ Rekha will close out the program, which will be followed by closing remarks by Queens College President Frank H. Wu and a rooftop reception and end-of-year celebration. Find out more information here.

Assessment Day Colloquium May 12 at 70 Murray and via Zoom
The BMCC Academic Assessment Committee (AAC) in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analytics (IEA) invites the BMCC faculty, staff and students to join the 2nd Annual Assessment Day Colloquium on May 12 from 9:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at 70 Murray Street on the third floor and also via Zoom. The event will examine Student Engagement Strategies Leading to Increased Learning and Success in the past year. Specifically, the colloquium will provide collaborative examples that have increased student engagement in the classroom; Identify strategies, alternative assessment modes, support services, and technologies with proven records of success to inform creativity and innovation; and address changing mindsets to learning post-pandemic. To learn more, click here.

Summer/Fall 2023 Advisement and Registration Is Open 
Faculty and staff, please encourage students to talk to their advisor to discuss their academic progress and registration. Things to know: All students must meet with their advisor before registering. Students can register on CUNYfirst or meet with a Panther Station Specialists on Zoom. When choosing classes on CUNYfirst, students should pay close attention to the class meeting mode (in-person, online or hybrid), as well as the class session (15, 8 or 7 weeks). Students attending in-person or hybrid classes must upload proof of vaccination. Deadline Approaching for Mandatory Employee Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Course (ESPARC) and Workplace Violence Prevention Training (WVP)
All employees, including adjuncts, must complete the ESPARC and WPV trainings by May 31, 2023. Employees are automatically registered for their campus training in Blackboard as long as they are active on CUNYfirst. Employees can sign into their CUNY Blackboard account and navigate to “my organizations” to view and complete both trainings.

Human Resources will host two final Zoom sessions of the ESPARC and WPV trainings. The pre-recorded sessions require around two hours to complete. The final two dates are: Tuesday, May 16th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Wednesday, May 17th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. To schedule a Zoom training, contact Lori Mazzola at (lmazzola@bmcc.cuny.edu.)
